10 Family Fun & Friendly Things to Do in Charleston

10 Family Fun Activities in Charleston SC

The weather is warming up and it’s time to have a great vacation with the family!  Here are ten sure-fire ways to make sure that not only the kids but the whole family stays entertained.

Water Tours

Charleston is surrounded by water which provides one of the best and most fun ways to experience this coastal city.  There are multitudes of harbor tours, fishing charters, kayak and water sport companies that can accommodate your family or larger group.

Museums and Parks

There are some great museums and parks in the area that are historical, educational and will make this a trip to remember.

Plantations and Historic Homes

Charleston is known for colonial era antebellum mansions and homes.  To get a real feel for the city we recommend visiting these landmarks.

Take a Land-based Tour

There are numerous tour companies that will ensure a great time for all.

Hit the Beaches

Of course the beach is a great activity that most everyone enjoys.  There are three main beaches in the
Charleston area which include:  Folly, Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island.

Walk the Historic District

Charleston is one of the most walkable and beautiful cities in America.  This is a fun excursion for the entire family where they'll learn some history as well.  Discover quaint alleyways, the grandiouse residences on The Battery, art galleries, museums and eateries along the way.

Shop Till You Drop

OK….so the kids may not enjoy this but while you’re in the shopping capital of the Southeast you have to
splurge a little!  If you’re downtown then King Street and the Market area is where you want to be.  In Mount
Pleasant, then visit Towne Center which boasts a 16 screen theater, 65 upscale shops and dining.  In the
North Charleston area then visit Tanger Outlets.

Culinary Indulgences

A favorite of visitors is the indulgence of culinary options that Charleston offers.  Everything from high-end
steak-houses, seafood, American and French influenced to Southern soul-food and are all here!  Visit our
Dining page and let the whims of your palette decide what suits you best.  You'll also find money saving coupons for some of the great restaurants in Charleston.

Walk the Arthur Ravenel Bridge

Also known as the Cooper River Bridge, it was completed in 2005 at a cost of over $700 million.  The
beautiful structure is a cable-stayed bridge with two diamond shaped towers each soaring to a height of
575’.  There is a walking/bike lane that provides unparalled and picturesque views of the harbor.  We
recommend walking from the Mount Pleasant side and back.

Visit Mount Pleasant’s Brand New Memorial Waterfront Park

The $14-million, 22-acre park is scheduled to open to the public on July 3, 2009.  Set against the dramatic
background of the Charleston Harbor and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, it will have the area's longest pier,
an eight-foot-tall war memorial statue cast in bronze, a Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Pavilion, a visitors center
and a playground.
